Helping Steampunk decide what to sound like since 2017
the steam powered radio available from here
(ok so it's not strictly steam powered and not strictly a radio)
Madam Misfit
The queen of swing, the Salt n Peppa of chap hop although i fear her chronology is a little awry given she purpotes to be steampunk but references the Wombles and Inspector Gadget.
Particular shoutout for the fact that three quarters of the radio household appear in one of her videos.
Magnetik
Czech electro weirdness with a steampunk vibe.
Magnificent Seven, the
Just about file under alt country
Mango jam
Appropriately mechanical sounding albeit electronic music. "Steampunk rainbows," is rather good with a slight industrial feel although towards then of the track it sounds like the Snoopy teacher singing. Everything has a bit of an 8 bit computer game feel and seems to alternate between instrumental the Blue Aeroplanes near spoken vocal delivery.
March Violets, the
I think they bought some goggles or a top hat or something for the last album. Still the March Violets were always very good anyway. "Made Glorious," is a grreat album and even gained plaudits through Radio 4 at the time of release although no more or less coggy than their other output as far as I can tell.
Marior
"Steampunk Song," is a slightly Gothy electro folk track with s hint of the medievil.
Mechanical Audio
Not at all bad. What I'd hoped Steampunk might sound like. Industrial rhythms with a bit of a sinister music box feel. 4 cogs
Mechanical Fox
Funky pop with a hint of shoegaze. Very listenable
Mechanisms, the
The Mechanisms have the rather dubious honour of being the first steampunk band i turned up in a charity shop but yeah me it means I now have proper physical copies of "Once upon a time (in space)" and "Ulysses Dies at Dawn." Both similar Operetta type concept affairs with a mixture of music interspersed with a kind of radio play. "Ulysses," is decidedly un-child friendly in a potty mouth kind of way but both are rather entertaining.
"Frankenstein," is a nice piece of instrumented narrative mixed with song and is one of their name your price offerings on bandcamp. This is definitely what steampunk sounds like.
Meehan, Mike and the Lucky Ones
"Man on a wire"'s intro is classic Springsteen before a slightly more Tom Pettyesqe vocal. Meehan has put a number of releases on bandcamp and frankly is one of the best self proclaimed steampunks we've heard but then we love Jersey Rock which is what this sounds like especially when there are tinges of the Mighty Wah thrown in. Not a goggle or cog in sight but when you've got a Spingsteen/Petty/Wylie combo going on I can overlook the lack of harpsichord.
Metropolis
Strictly speaking the "R" should be reversed but I don't know if there is an ASCII code for that. A bit proggy as they self identify but with a big dose of early Nightbreed guitar Goth. Could even be All Living Fear
Midgley, Gordon
Kind of apocalyptic folk but in a Geoff Wayne kind of way. Victorian horror
Mieville Project
Think lounge bar pianist with a bit of random Jazz and a female vocalist who appears to occasionally recite lines of poetry. Not entirely my cup of tea but I'd be happy if this is what steampunk sounds like
Miss Von Trapp
Good old fashioned sinister Victorian dark folk.
Mocha Lab
Edwardian funk
Monmouth, Joe
"(Steam) Punk," feels like kind of cut and paste dark ambient with breakbeats
Morgan, Travis
Quite atmospeheric almost dark ambient. "The Oracle," is rather more computer game rock.
Morning Star, the
"Steampunk," is quite noisy metal with growly vocals
Morrison, Kirsten
"Proserpine's Gold," is a very nice ethereal imagined soundtrack
Morvheim
Quite epic metal but "Airships," has nice steampunk illustrations. Vocals very much of the growly black metal variety mind.
